Kudumbashree (officially the State Poverty Eradication Mission) is Kerala’s flagship poverty alleviation and women-empowerment initiative, launched by the Government of Kerala in 1998. Operating through a unique three-tier democratic structure under Local Self-Governments (Panchayats and Municipalities), it organizes local women into Neighborhood Groups (NHGs or Ayalkkoottams) at the grassroots, federated into Area Development Societies (ADS) at the ward level, and Community Development Societies (CDS) at the local body level. By combining thrift-and-credit microfinance with community action, Kudumbashree enables economic self-reliance while providing women with a platform to address social issues, access governance, and lead local planning initiatives.

Beyond financial empowerment through micro-enterprises and collective farming, Kudumbashree functions as a major social safety net and service provider across Kerala. Key programs include the Haritha Karma Sena for decentralized waste management, Janakeeya Hotels providing affordable meals, the Snehitha Gender Help Desk offering support against domestic violence, and Asraya for destitute rehabilitation. By driving micro-entrepreneurship, building grassroots leadership, and stepping up as a frontline response network during natural disasters and public health crises, Kudumbashree has transformed millions of women into key drivers of local development, social equity, and community resilience.
